eircom is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of sponsoring Special Olympics Ireland this year. The event is taking place in Limerick from 9th to 13th June with 1900 athletes from Ireland and Northern Ireland competing in the event.
As part of the run up to the Games, the Garda and PSNI are running the torch all over Ireland, visiting various schools and clubs whose athletes will be competing. The Games are open to children and adults from 8 years old upwards with intellectual disabilities.
The lead up to the Games kicks off with the Law Enforcement Torch Run which sees members of the Garda and PSNI taking the torch to 58 locations nationwide, with a small ceremony to welcome it to each location, to wish the athletes the best of luck and see the torch off again on its journey to Limerick. The purpose of the LE Run is to raise awareness of the Special Olympics and Intellectual Disability, serve as guardians of ‘The Flame of Hope’ and fundraise for the Olympics.
On its journey through Northern Ireland, the torch will be visiting 10 locations. The whole team at eircom is proud and delighted to be such an integral part of the Games and to have built up such a strong relationship with Special Olympics since the Games commenced in 1985 and we look forward to another amazing and memorable Games.
